THE RELUCTANT ATHLETE | Our Story
For people who love sport... reluctantly.
Let's be honest. Most of us did not grow up wanting to be athletes. We grew up wanting to watch TV, eat cereal, and avoid anything that involved a whistle. And yet here we are, signed up for fun runs, standing on pickleball courts at 7am, dodging magpies on our bikes, and inexplicably paying money to suffer on golf courses.
The Reluctant Athlete was born from that gap between who we thought we would be and who we actually are. It is a celebration of every person who drags themselves out the door, finishes last and still orders a burger on the way home. We make shirts for people who love sport but refuse to take it too seriously.
Where the humour comes from:
Growing up on a diet of Monty Python, South Park, The Young Ones, and every form of British comedy that could be watched on a fuzzy VHS, I developed an instinct for finding the absurd in everyday life. Sport, it turns out, is an absolute goldmine. Nothing reveals human nature quite like watching someone have an existential crisis over a missed putt, or a grown adult sprint away from a bird.
The Surf range
Alongside the humour collection, we also design a range of Japanese ukiyo-e inspired surf shirts for people who love the ocean, the art, and the feeling of being somewhere warm and coastal. Designed for surfers and beach lovers who want something more distinctive than anything you will find in a surf shop.

Every shirt, hoodie and sweatshirt is printed on premium blanks from Gildan, Bell+Canvas and AS Colour. These are not your average print-on-demand throwaways. They are made to be worn repeatedly, washed badly, and still look good. The prints are DTG (direct-to-garment), which means the design goes deep into the fabric and stays crisp after dozens of washes.
